Take 2 with Herb Ohta, Jr., Jon Yamasato, & special guest Keoki Kahumoku
Join ʻukulele master Herb Ohta, Jr. and singer-songwriter Jon Yamasato as they celebrate the release of "Take 2" - their second album together. Five-time Grammy Award winning slack key guitarist Keoki Kahumoku will also perform in his engaging and often humorous "talk story" style. Herb, Jon, and Keoki will also perform a few songs together - something not to be missed!

Son of acclaimed `ukulele virtuoso Herb "Ohta-san" Ohta, Herb Ohta, Jr. began playing at age three and teaching at age nine. He was a member of the prestigious Honolulu Boy Choir, the Honolulu Children's Opera Chorus, and the University High School Select Choir. Although influenced by Jazz, R&B, Latin, and Brazilian music, some of which is evident in his recordings and performances, Hawaiian music remains his favorite. He has won Hawai'i's coveted Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award (the Hawaiian Grammy) as well as multiple Hawaiʻi Music Awards. Considered one of today's most prolific ʻukulele masters, he has over 50 recordings to his credit, including nine solo albums and eleven duets; three with six-time Grammy Award winner Daniel Ho, three with five-time Grammy Award winner Keoki Kahumoku, two with his father, Ohta-san, two with multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner and former Pure Heart front-man Jon Yamasato, and one with multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, composer, actor, producer, director, and kumu hula Tony Conjugacion.

Ohta, Jr. is also an accomplished producer, composer, and instructor, having taught such noted musicians as Brittni Paiva and Jake Shimabukuro.  John Berger of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser has said of him, "For ʻukulele fans who prefer unpretentious technical proficiency over theatrics, Herb Ohta, Jr. is the undisputed master ʻukulele instrumentalist of his generation."

Jon Yamasato has been part of the Hawaii music industry for over half of his life. He  began his career as the lead singer for the 5 time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning trio Pure Heart (with Lopaka Colon and Jake Shimabukuro), and he has recorded and performed throughout the U.S. and  Japan with acts such as Herb Ohta, Jr., Na Oiwi, David Kamakahi,  Darin Leong, and Justin Young. He has also produced other bands, including the wildly popular, multiple award-winning Keahiwai (Mailani Makainai and Lei Melket), whose third album spent two weeks on the Billboard Magazine World Music Chart in 2005, peaking at #10. In 2011, Jon and partner Dave Kusumoto created HI Sessions, a high-quality live music series featuring a variety of Hawaiʻi's top musicians. The show airs weekly on KFVE TV in Hawaiʻi and is available year round on YouTube.

Keoki Kahumoku, son of acclaimed slack key guitarist George Kahumoku, Jr., is a fifth generation slack-key guitarist, 'ukulele performer, and teacher with deep roots in Hawai'i. He shares his passion for Hawaiian music and culture through performances and lessons, both in Hawai'i and on the mainland, as well as at the Kahumoku 'Ohana Music and Lifestyle Workshop held annually on Hawai'i Island. He has performed on five Grammy award-winning slack-key compilation albums, and he captures the hearts of his audience with his storytelling and easy manner wherever he performs. His non-profit Center for Hawaiian Music Studies provides music instruction and cultural opportunities to local youth.

When not on the road or teaching, you can find Keoki farming his land or hunting with his dogs. Equally comfortable cooking for a crowd or performing for them, Keoki draws his inspiration from his roots. Like his dad, Keoki's performance is as much about his relaxed, engaging "talk story" as it is about his wide Hawaiian repertoire. George Jr. has said that his son "has a passion for Hawaiian music in all its forms." This passion is evident as Keoki continues to teach and share Hawai'i's music and culture.
