The Night of the Big Wind is a new contemporary dance theatre work by Irish based dance artists Ailish Claffey and Alicia Christofi-Walshe.
This work is born out of the success of the duo's work Cnoic Chlaonta performed in Boston and New York in 2012 with the kind funding of Culture Ireland. Claffey & Christofi-Walshe are delighted to be invited by The Candy Factory to premiere this new work in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The Night of the Big Wind looks at Irish Proverbs passed down from generation to generation. On the night of January 6th 1839 a hurricane hit the country and thatched roofs were shredded and destroyed by the wind. This became known as The Night of The Big Wind and is still vivid in folk memory.
With a keen interest in story Claffey and Christofi-Walshe weave together this provocative and striking work encapsulating the essence of Irish culture with a unique physicality.

Shift(h)er is a bittersweet love story. In the Irish dialect the word shift has two meanings. A more formal meaning is to change or replace, and another meaning in Irish slang, to kiss.
This emotionally engaging piece is a physical dialogue of the emotional torrents of heartbreak shared through the mediums of performance art and dance. This heartbreak junkie brings the mental landscape of loss to the stage with a refreshing sincerity.
Choreography, performance and sound design by Alicia with collaborators Ailish Claffey (choreology), Petra Hjortsberg (theatre design) and Jody O'Neill (dramaturgy). Shift(h)er has been performed at Derida Dance Center (Bulgaria), DanceHouse (Ire), Movement Research, Spoke the Hub (NYC), Somerville Dance Fest (Boston) and Cultivate (NH).
