TERRA as in the planet earth and BYTE a unit of storage in computers, TERRA-BYTE creates a platform for artists to interpret the natural world through art, science, and emerging technology within the beautiful gardens of The Arboretum. Explore music, garden tours, interactive exhibits and a cash bar. $10/person (Children age 5 and under are admitted free).

Carmen Argote: "Game Counter #3"
Sound inhabits and triggers a sentimental area of our memory. This feeling most often called nostalgia, creates an abstract idea of how things were. There are many global environmental factors that have contributed to the changing presence of nature in our lives. The way that nature was, becomes the subject of this visual and sound installation. Often times, nature is remembered as more abundant, larger in scale, and more present in our daily lives. Game counter #3 is created with this idea as a starting point, the image is based on an antique object used to keep score for table games. The relationship between the central plant silhouette to its inhabitants allows for the viewer to mix and match. The image reads both like an object and a diagram, inviting the viewer to play with the connections between the mechanical and the natural, technology and landscape, the outdated and the ever present.. The sound of the slides running through an almost obsolete slide projector creates the repetitive sound of a distant woodpecker, a sound that is familiar yet very distant and mysterious.
Launa Bacon: "Cold Fusion, Fire from Water"
Cold fusion is a controversial, and fantastic discovery made by two of the brightest contemporary electrochemists. In Jules Verne's 1890 novel, "The Mysterious Island," Verne predicted an age of water fuel: "I believe that water will one day be employed as a fuel. That hydrogen and oxygen that constitute it, used singly or together, will furnish an inexhaustible source of heat and light, of an intensity of which coal is not capable...I believe then that when the deposits of coal are exhausted, we shall heat and warm ourselves with water. Water will be the coal of the future." This installation at the main fountain of The Arboretum creates a physical manifestation of the nuclear reaction of cold fusion: the extraction of hydrogen and oxygen from water through electrolysis - electro chemistry. Floating white coloured LED lights personify fire in water in the pattern of the scientific diagram of cold fusion. The forms are a hybridization of both natural and man-made forms.
Friendly Integration: Derek Michael/Eric Hanson of Friendly Integration create "Blumination"
This installation is that of the blue whale, the majestic and gentle giant of sea, standing in marked contrast to the terrestrial environment of The Arboretum. This large plexiglass installation illuminated by LED and video projections also emits sounds of blue whale communication. Friendly Integration's approach to integrating music, new media and the environment, brings these elements together in a spatial dialogue to seemingly disparate spaces, people, art, and technology in the hopes of illuminating commonalities that unite us all.
Friendly Integration creates new media and performance events dedicated to exploring and furthering cross-disciplinary engagements within the arts.
Infranatural: "The Amazing Mental Telescope"
Broadcast your inner brain wave activity into the night sky. Oliver Hess, Jenna Didier and Marcos Lutyens of infranatural, have created "The Amazing Mental Scope", an installation that uses a Neurosky EEG headset to project this experience into a spectacular lighting display. The viewer can look up at the stars and their mental response would then be displayed on the outside of the tube of the scope as a series of changing colored lights - the patterns and colors change depending on the mental activity of the viewer creating a public mental beacon for the excitement and fascinations felt throughout the evening.
A new and emerging generation of EEG (Electroencephalography) devices is beginning to help shed light on the brain's unknown regions. With the NeuroSky EEG headset, a device that measures the electrical activity in the brain, infranatural has been able to use the advances in technology for "brain" health spas and video games to externalize the delicate palette of inner emotions through real-time analysis of alpha and beta waves within the brain.

our most precious resource--water is represented in a 1,200 frame per second projection running on a bamboo volumetric sculpture. Suspended water droplets with little terrariums of under sea gardens made out of crochet using the hyperbolic technique that mathematicians use to represent forms and algorithms from nature lead you up to the water source.
