This summer Monkey Town moves from Brooklyn to Eyebeam in Chelsea, June 13th - August 11, for a two month nightly pop up before launching a national tour. Seatings are in Eyebeam's spacious exhibition hall, at 7pm and 9:15pm.
Monkey Town at Eyebeam reconstructs the original and still unprecedented cinema-in-the-round, this time as a seamless floating cube of 4 massive projection screens, with 8.1 surround sound. This 10th anniversary edition will feature a single curated film and video program that replays every night for 60 days, featuring almost all multi-channel works by 21 extraordinary artists and filmmakers co-curated by Montgomery Knott and Maggie Lee.
The original Monkey Town ran from May, 2003 till December, 2004. It was located in a private loft space at 222 Leonard St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Emphasis was on video art, but live music was also performed. Same set up, 4 screens and food. Chefs moonlighted. There were 99 performances over 19 months.
The second Monkey Town ran from October 2005 till January 2010. It was located at 58 N. 3rd St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Open nightly for 4 years and 4 months, a front dining room and bar were added, while the back dining room continued the original layout: 4 screens; communal seating; 6.1 surround sound; capacity of 50. A full menu was available every night.
This is NOT Sleep No More. This will NOT be held over. Seats are limited.
