Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday August 5 - 7, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Kepler's Books 1010 El Camino Real Menlo Park, CA 94025 http://www.keplers.com/classes-keplers
Writing the personal essay for college admissions can be a stressful experience. How does one write an attention-grabbing personal essay that accurately showcases one's intellectual and creative abilities? This course will focus on the key features of the personal narrative, including how to write a compelling account of an experience, incorporate meaningful reflection, and express ideas and feelings within a coherent structure.
Students will complete the course with a polished, ready-to-submit personal essay that is rhetorically sophisticated and emotionally poignant. Each two-hour session will include handouts, a short lecture, fun and dynamic activities, and significant writing time with one-on-one mentoring. Attendees are expected to bring a laptop (preferable) or a notebook and writing utensil and any ideas, drafts, or thoughts previously formed about their admission essay. Nicole Hughes is a lecturer at San Jose State University and the Acting Director of the Center for Literary Arts. She recently completed an MFA in fiction writing from San Jose State University, where she now teaches composition in the English & Comparative Literature Department. Her story "Impasto Portrait" was published in Liebamour. As an MFA student, she was awarded the 2011 Ann Lillis Creative Writing Scholarship and the 2009 and 2011 James Phelan Literary Award.
Jessica Senn is a fiction writer and 5th-grade teacher at the Phillips Brooks School in Menlo Park. She holds a BA in English from Stanford University and an MFA in fiction writing from San Jose State University. In her classroom, she uses the Lucy Calkins' Writer's Workshop method, which emphasizes brainstorming, revision, and personalized feedback, to bring out the best in young writers. Her story "Christmas in the Desert" was published in Cicada, and she is currently at work on her first young adult novel.
