Debo Band with special guest Angela Sheik
Debo Band is honored to be on NPR Music's 50 Favorite Albums of 2012: "This is one of the best finds of the year, bar none. The Boston-based Debo Band takes traditional Ethiopian sounds and scales to a new place with sousaphone, accordion, violin and electric guitar  a party where funk, soul and free jazz swirl together with the heady, sultry melodies and harmonies of Addis Ababa. (If you think the album's great, then you've got to catch Debo Band live  that's where the groove and sweat really kick in.)" Anastasia Tsioulcas

Debo Band is a 11-member group led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Since their inception in 2006, the band has won raves for their groundbreaking take on Ethiopian pop music (think Ethiopiques), which incorporates traditional scales and vocal styles, alongside American soul and funk rhythms, and instrumentation reminiscent of Eastern European brass bands. Debo have toured Ethiopia twice, appearing at both the Ethiopian Music Festival in Addis Ababa and Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar, the largest music festival in East Africa. In North America, they've shared stages with Gogol Bordello, Amadou & Mariam, Antibalas, The Family Stone, and Ethiopian great Tilahun Gessesse. Recent and upcoming performances include the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Bumbershoot, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, The Kennedy Center, Montreal Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, South by Southwest, globalFEST 2012, Joe's Pub, International Festival of Arts & Ideas, and Montana Folk Festival. Their self-titled debut for Sub Pop / Next Ambiance was produced by Thomas "Tommy T" Gobena of Gogol Bordello and features album art by critically-renowned painter Julie Mehretu. It was recorded at Machines with Magnets (Battles, Deer Tick) and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Joe LaPorta at The Lodge.

Debo Band features:

Bruck Tesfaye vocals
Danny Mekonnen saxophones
Gabriel Birnbaum tenor saxophone
Danilo Henriquez trumpet and percussion
Jonah Rapino electric violin
Kaethe Hostetter 5-string violin
MariƩ Abe accordion
Brendon Wood guitar
Arik Grier sousaphone
PJ Goodwin bass
Adam Clark drums

Opening the show will be Arden favorite Angela Sheik! in her return to Gild Hall stage having opener for Julia Holter in April, 2012 to great acclaim.  BOSS US National Loop Champion Angela Sheik is a fierce vocal- and multi-instrumentalist who wows audiences with her fast effects pedal footwork and mischievous smile. She builds her own virtual backup band using rhythmic harmonies, beatbox rhythms, a looper pedal, and a collection of unusual instruments (including autoharp, theremin, and flute). This, combined with soulful, memorable, gut-felt melodies, blends into an electronic-infused, folk-pop style reminiscent of Imogen Heap.
