Butterfield 8 presents PYGMALION
A brilliantly witty reworking of the classical tale of the sculptor who falls in love with his perfect female statue, "Pygmalion" is also a barbed attack on the British class system and a statement of Shaw's feminist views. In Shaw's telling, the phoneticist Henry Higgins is the Pygmalion figure who believes he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a duchess at ease in polite society. The one thing he overlooks is that his "creation" has a mind of her own.
"Pygmalion" both delighted and scandalized its first audiences in 1914, and became an Oscar-winning film in 1938. It was also adapted into the wildly successful Broadway musical (with it's own Oscar-winning film treatment) "My Fair Lady".
Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw directed by John Butterfield produced by arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Featuring: John Butterfield as Henry Higgins and Becky Potter as Eliza Doolittle, with Ali Arman, Deborah Black, Jake Breckinridge, Alan Cameron, Deborah Doyle, Gary Mutz, Bailie Simpson, and Maureen-Theresa Williams.
