Cort Armstrong is hitting the recording studio again, this time with Jim Faddis and their new band, FarmStrong. After the huge success of Cort and Kia Armstrong's live studio recording last December, Dungeness Community Studios is opening their doors once again to the Armstrongs and friends.
The community is invited to participate on Saturday June 1st by buying tickets to one of two live shows. Audience members become "co-producers" of the album with both their financial support and their enthusiasm for local music.
Donna Rankin attended Cort and Kia Armstrong's live recording a few months ago and really appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the production. "Wow! That was really something specialon so many levels!", she shared. "It was a wonderful thing to be a part of!"
Another audience member commented the next day that they were "Still feeling the after burn (is that what they call it?) Maybe more of an after glow. :)Anyway, we LOVED everything about yesterday!"
FarmStrong is excited to build on that momentum and hit the studio on June 1st! Performance times are 3:30pm and 7:00pm, and the $30 ticket price includes a FarmStrong CD and invitation to a reception in-between shows at the Armstrong's house, which is just across the street from Dungeness Community Studios.
Originally sparked as a collaboration between Jim Faddis and Cort Armstrong, FarmStrong's music, whether bluegrass duets or old-time country blues, features the pair's harmony singing. Their full band also includes dobro player Rick Meade and upright bassist John Pyles. The four have over 100 years of collective performance experience between them, and play a wide variety of country and folk music, from blues to bluegrass. With tight harmony vocals, and distinctively fashioned arrangements of traditional country and blues songs, the band lays down some pretty serious picking!
Jim Faddis is best known for leading the Spokane-based bluegrass powerhouse, Prairie Flyer, a dominant bluegrass band of the Eastern Washington area. Currently, Jim leads Prairie Flyer and his newer project, One More Ride, which features his solid original song repertoire.
Cort Armstrong brought his band, Blue Rooster, to Asheville, NC, in 1999, where he worked through songs from traditional bluegrass to black string band music, with some of the best musical talent in that area. Now back on the west coast, Blue Rooster features a couple of Seattle pickers who join Cort's peninsula rhythm section.
Rick Meade is a major player in the Western Washington bluegrass scene, flatpicking guitar with Me & The Boys, playing banjo and dobro for Brother's Keeper, and dobro with Rural Delivery. While his dobro playing adds another dimension to the band, it is Rick's love of harmony singing that drew him to the group. His and Cort's resonator guitars carve out a unique musical duet with music ranging from bluegrass to country blues.
John Pyles has been immersed in bluegrass since the '70's, playing in bands from SF to Seattle. His keen sense of arrangement compounds the contribution of his exceptional bass playing.
Also making an appearance at the live studio recordings on June 1st is Cort and Kia's new son and future band member, Spencer Armstrong. Three-month-old Spencer already has a great set of lungs and is looking forward to the production of this community CD, having bounced around in the belly of his mama last time they were in the studio!
"We're so excited to be working again with sound engineer Bill Yates at Dungeness Community Studios. We've been looking forward to recording this album for quite some time now, and can't wait to see how its energy is increased by the live audience," shared Cort. "This is music of and for the people."
