Bojan Vuletic: L'Écume des jours'
ISSUE Project Room and ASPHALT Festival present L'Écume des jours' (The foam of the days), compositions by Bojan Vuletic inspired by and dedicated to French polymath Boris Vian. Based on Vian's novel of the same title, the music is composed in a linear form that crosses contemporary and improvised music, and attempts to capture this book with all its absurdities, humor, lightness, and both tragic and playful moments. Featuring an unusual chamber ensemble of exceptional musicians equally fluent and virtuosic in contemporary and improvised languages, this performance includes Nate Wooley (trumpet), Dan Peck (tuba), Jacqueline Kerrod (harp), and the Mivos Quartet.
L'Écume des jours' is part of composer Bojan Vuletic ongoing composition cycle "RecomposingArt" (2011 ), which takes inspiration from artworks through recomposition. Vuletic takes these works out of their context in a completely subjective manner, transporting them into a new, purely musical and independent form. L'Écume des jours is the third part of this cycle, following Atemwende (9 poems by Paul Celan, premiered at ISSUE in 2011), and Unschaerfe (8 pictures by Gerhard Richter).
Boris Vian (1920 1959) was a French polymath: writer, poet, musician, singer, translator, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. His fiction features a highly individual writing style with numerous made-up words, subtle wordplay and surrealistic plots. He is best remembered today for his novels. L'Écume des jours (Froth on the Daydream) is the best known of these works, and one of the few translated into English. Vian was also an important influence on the French jazz scene, serving as liaison for Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis in Paris.
Bojan Vuletic is a composer, musical director, producer, writer of lyrics and performing guitarist playing concerts in and/or collaborating with artists from Europe, Serbia, USA, South America, Korea, Egypt, Russia and Australia. After a short hitchhike through the galaxy (his diploma in astro-physics and a thesis dealing with galaxy evolution), he finished jazz-guitar at the conservatory in Arnhem and composition at the Messiaen-Akademie. His compository works reach from chamber, orchestra and contemporary to world and pop music for a larger variety of groups and projects, theatre productions, contemporary dance, short movies, documentaries and commercials. As a guitarist he happily ignores the boundaries between different genres and free improvisation. He has composed over 2 dozen pieces for music theater, numerous works for contemporary dance, sound design and composition for movies and video installations, and works for Radio Televizija Srbije (RTS). He is a recipient of the city of Düsseldorf music award 2012.
Nate Wooley (b. 1974) was raised in Clatskanie, Oregon, a small fishing and lumber town on the Columbia River. He began playing trumpet professionally with his father at age 12. After college in Eugene, Oregon and Denver, Colorado he moved to Jersey City, NJ, where he currently resides. Since 2001 he has become a much sought after performer, composer, and improvisor, working with Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, John Zorn, Christian Marclay, C. Spencer Yeh, and David Grubbs among others. His trumpet playing has been called "exquisitely hostile" by Italy's Touching Extremes Magazine, and his solo performances and recordings have been numbered amongst a privileged handful that have helped to shape a new approach to the instrument.
Dan Peck is a New York based tubist, multi-instrumentalist active as a soloist, improviser, composer, and artistic collaborator in a wide variety of settings. He has premiered solo tuba works by Robert Sirota, Craig Woodward, and Ignacio Baca-Lobra, and has played solo works/recitals at St. Bartholomew's Church, Merkin Hall, and the Stone. In group settings, Peck has worked with legendary musicians including conductors James Levine and Herbert Blomstedt, composers Anthony Braxton and Bruce Neely, and New York luminaries Dave Taylor and Dave Liebman, among many others. In addition to playing with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Peck has also played with Alarm Will Sound, Second InstrumentalUnit, New World Symphony, and the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra.
South African born, New York based harpist Jacqueline Kerrod is a versatile performer. She is a member of American Modern Ensemble and has performed with Argento Chamber Ensemble, the International Contemporary Ensemble and Wet Ink Ensemble. Kerrod has appeared as a member of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, New York City Opera and as a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Her duo, Clockwise, with acclaimed violinist Marc Uys, has been presented by venues including SFMOMA and the Harare International Festival of the Arts, Zimbabwe. Kerrod was the winner of the harp competition at the Aspen Music Festival (2001). She was a featured soloist at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival with world renowned flutist Ransom Wilson. Kerrod has performed and recorded with Antony and the Johnsons.
The Mivos Quartet, an "accomplished, admirably broad-minded young string quartet" New York Times, is devoted to performing the works of contemporary composers, presenting new music to diverse audiences. Since the quartet's beginnings in 2008 they have performed, commissioned and closely collaborated with an ever-expanding group of international composers who represent multiple aesthetics of contemporary classical composition. Beyond expanding the string quartet repertoire, Mivos is committed to working with guest artists and exploring multi-media projects involving live video and electronics as well as improvisation. Mivos has appeared on concert series including Darmstadt Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Darmstadt, Germany), Asphalt Festival (Düsseldorf, Germany), Concerti Aperitivo (Udine, Italy), HellHOT! New Music Festival (Hong Kong), Edgefest (Ann Arbor, MI), and Aldeburgh Music (UK), where Mivos was invited to work with the Arditti Quartet and Helmut Lachenmann for a week-long masterclass intensive. Mivos was one of five groups selected for the Young Ensembles Fellowship at the 2012 Darmstadt Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, where they were awarded a Fellowship Prize for Interpretation. Mivos returned to Aldeburgh Music in January 2013 for a two-week residency, where they performed several concerts featuring repertoire by British and American composers, and recorded their upcoming album featuring music by Alex Mincek, Felipe Lara, David Franzson, and Wolfgang Rihm.
