Palisades Farmers' Market Dinner
In small villages in the Dordogne region of France, once a week the village square is set up for a party: Long picnic benches and chairs are squeezed in around long tables, some of which are made of saw horses with a board thrown on top. At 6:00, people carrying picnic baskets filled with dishes, silverware, cloth napkins, tablecloths and glassware, hustle to stake out their spot at the table. They may sit next to friends or sit next to people they don't know, maybe from a village or country far away. Then they wait.
They wait until the farm/food stands that are lined up in a circle around the tables are ready. People jump from booth to booth: Maybe starting with a salad and then going back for something grilled. Families send little ones back for more food. Back and forth thru their meal, chatting with people they know as they wait in line over a glass of wine.
Then it is over. The tables and chairs are shuttled into some make shift storage shed. The twinkling lights are unplugged and in the morning the village square will be back to normal with people bustling to and fro school and work. But once a week it is magic.
Our farmers' market dinner is patterned after these night markets. It's not the same.but pretty close! It's a wonderful way to celebrate the end of our winter farmers' market season.
Grilled food, local organic salads and vegetables, breads, cheese, desserts, wine, drinks, and a full coffee bar.
Admission is free. Food is purchased a la carte. Bringing your own tableware is optional.
