STEPHAN MICUS : refined contemplative acoustic music from exotic instruments STEVE ROACH : extended electro-acoustic journeys in the sound current

His unique style has been built on field travel and study of traditional instruments and musical techniques from Japan, India, Asia, Japan, South America, Africa and dozens of traditional cultures around the world. On over 25 albums to date for the ECM label, he plays all the instruments in non-traditional and unprecedented ways. Working alone, he often employs many layers of a single instrument or his voice to create remarkable textures and harmonies. While he has performed hundreds of solo concerts over the last 30 years throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, this will be only his third appearance in the U.S.
STEVE ROACH has achieved international renown as a pioneer and cornerstone of Ambient-atmospheric-electronic music. Roach earned his position in the international pantheon of major new music artists through almost 100 groundbreaking recordings and collaborations, fueled by his prolific nature and uncompromising approach. His innovative sound worlds have been nourished by years of live concerts worldwide, experience that has enhanced the emotive, cinematic soul-stirring depth of his music. HANS CHRISTIAN : deep improvisations for looped cello, saranghi & nyckelharpe STELLAMARA : powerful ethnic fusion with Balkan and Middle Eastern roots
Trained in his native Germany as a classical cellist, HANS CHRISTIAN emerged in the U.S. as a versatile and talented recording artist and record producer. As a session bassist in Los Angeles in the 1980s he worked with icons like Robbie Robertson and Daniel Lanois. After moving to the Bay area, he immersed himself in the ethnic and classical music of India and Europe while working as a player, recording engineer and producer.
A multi-instrumentalist, he gives unique voice and exposure to obscure instruments like the sarangi, sitara and nyckelharpa. He co-founded the much-beloved Bengali devotional duo RASA with singer Kim Waters. He produced six albums with RASA, in addition to seven solo albums and collaborations with the alternative world band Vas, singer Krishna Das, guitarist Harry Manx, and ambient musician Robert Rich.
STELLAMARA is an internationally acclaimed world music ensemble founded and led by the inspiring vocalist SONJA DRAKULICH. Their innovative electro-acoustic sets feature passionate rhythms and Middle Eastern melodies with dramatic orchestral sections, otherworldly ambience, and hypnotic bass grooves. Drakulich has as singular a vocal style as Lisa Gerrard does, but with the added allure of a siren." (Alternative Press).
Integrating diverse cultural sources rooted in Turkish, Eastern European, Medieval, Arabic, and Persian music, Stellamara is at the forefront of contemporary world music, giving new life and modern expression to the beautiful and mysterious qualities of traditional modal music.
