A TWO NIGHT EVENT co-curated by Michael Kelly and Kathleen Tagg; part of NY NOW!, an annual SongFusion series created by Kathleen Tagg.
The program of the first concert, on MAY 3rd at the ***National Opera Center***, will include works by some of NY's finest song composers: Eve Beglarian, David Del Tredici, Paula Kimper, David Leisner, Ben Moore, Ned Rorem, Glen Roven, and David Sisco. The program explores issues of gay life (sex, exploration, love and loss) and will include a set of songs by Ben Moore commissioned by SongFusion in 2011 for our baritone, Michael Kelly. Don't miss the post-concert panel discussion with the composers, led by music/media scholar and NYU professor Martin Scherzinger!
Performers include: Brent Funderburk, piano Michael Kelly, baritone Mary Mackenzie, soprano Naomi O'Connell, mezzo-soprano Brent Ryan, tenor Kathy Tagg, piano
On MAY 5th, (see separate ticket listing at www.newyorknow2.brownpapertickets.com) SongFusion presents Voxare String Quartet and baritone Michael Kelly in a special benefit performance of Ricky Ian Gordon's Green Sneakers, held at the ***LGBT Community Center*** with stage direction by Jeanne Slater. Hailed by OperaToday as "...a masterpiece," Green Sneakers is a heart wrenching account of the loss of Ricky's partner Jeffrey Grossi to AIDS. Stunningly honest, the songs draw particular attention to the often unseen struggles of the caretaker of a sick loved-one. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Bailey Holt House, an AIDS facility in Greenwich Village, which suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy.
