AATC Acting Studio: Alexander Technique Class
This 8-week course by the AATC Acting Studio is taught by Constance Clare, a renowned instructor in the Alexander Technique. This course is open to all levels. You will learn how to rid the body of harmful tension for acting and for everyday life. Classes are every Thursday from 7:00pm - 9:00pm from March 9 - April 27. Personal hands-on instruction is included every week half an hour before class begins.
Actors have been using the Alexander Technique to enhance their performance for over a hundred years. F.M. Alexander was himself a Shakespearean actor who developed the Technique when he developed voice problems. The use of Alexander's technique by actors and musicians spread rapidly. It is now a fundamental part of actor training in many major drama schools and music academies: RADA, LAMDA, The Guildhall, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, and the Trinity College of Music. It is also central to the training of actors at Juilliard in New York and ACT in San Francisco.
Its usage has moved beyond actors and is now utilized for:
- Acting - Dance - Music - Meditation - Sports - Pain Relief - Stress Reduction
Students often describe the immediate effect of an Alexander lesson as both a new physical sensation and also surprisingly familiar. The technique allows you to bring back your 'natural' movement before years of tension and unconscious physical habits have taken their toll. During hands-on lessons, pupils have reported an immediate feeling of a "state of grace." Other reported experiences include hearing their own voice sounding different, feeling lighter or having a temporary disorientation of where their body is located spatially. Many adult students have reported a gaining an inch or so in height after a few months of regular lessons.
Each weekly course is composed of five sections: 1) optional hands-on training half an hour before class, 2) lecture starting at 7PM, 3) hands-on workshop from 7:30-8:30pm, 4) monologue work from 8:30pm-9:00pm and 5) reading assignments.
At the end of the course, each student will have powerful physical presence, enhanced vocal control and vivid spatial awareness. Negative physical habits creating tension will be removed. You will feel a new freedom with your body to be a better performer. This class is especially helpful for non-actors who have jobs or lives that require public speaking, management or parenting.
