Luisa Miller: an opera by Giuseppe Verdi
Berkeley Chamber Opera presents Luisa Miller An opera by Giuseppe Verdi
Sunday November 12th 2pm Saturday November 18th 7pm
Berkeley Hillside Club 2286 Cedar St., Berkeley CA
Performed in Italian with chamber orchestra and supertitles.
Based on the revolutionary play Love and Intrigue by Friedrich von Schiller (who wrote the famous Ode to Joy), this intimate story makes a case for true love while questioning the legitimacy of societal hierarchy. Regarded as the first of Verdis middle period operas, this work defies compositional conventions and elevates the needs of the drama in the musical form. The opera introduces material later made famous in masterpieces such as Rigoletto, Traviata and Trovatore.
Review of a previous BCO production: "In every aspect - singing, orchestra, staging, costumes, acting this production demonstrated what great things a small opera company can do."
