ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Patrick Alonzo Conway is a percussionist, wind player and composer. He has studied with noted master drummers from around the world and has traveled to Cuba and Bali to study. Pat holds a Masters in Music Composition from the UMKC Conservatory, was a founding member of newEar and works with Terrestrial Consort, Peoples Liberation Big Band of Greater KC, Mambo DeLeon Orquesta/Carte Blanc, Chris Hazelton's Boogaloo 7, Matt Hoppers Agora, Expassionates, Arnold Youngs Roughtet and BCR. He currently is director of the community Balinese gamelan orchestra Gamelan Genta Kasturi, who premiered a large scale collaborative work through Urban Culture Project and ArtSounds featuring his original compositions entitled Angels & Demons at Play. Gamelan Genta Kasturi was awarded Studio Space through the Charlotte Street/Urban Culture Project Studio Residency Program from 2011-2016 and currently resides in Laura Isaacs Arts Dojo. Mr. Conway is also a recipient of the Charlotte Street Foundation Generative Performing Artist Fellow Award.

Brad Cox is a composer, arranger and co-founder of Owen/Cox Dance Group and founder and director of The Peoples Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City, a musicians collective dedicated to the performance of new large ensemble jazz music. Coxs musical influences range from liturgical chant and traditional folkloric music to popular music and free jazz, with a particular interest in the communal aspects of music making. A composer in the uniquely American Ellington tradition, he has dedicated his work to forming creative collaborative relationships with musicians and to writing music for those musicians. Cox studied composition at UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance under James Mobberley and Gerald Kemner and is a recipient of the 2010 Charlotte Street Foundation Generative Performing Artist Award and the 2009 Tanne Foundation Award.

Amado Espinoza, from Bolivia, is a unique composer/performing artist/educator. He specializes in the Bolivian charango, a small ten-stringed guitar, but he demonstrates mastery of over 40 instruments, including Latin, African and Arabic percussion, and native flutes from all over the world. He builds custom-made native instruments from all parts of the globe.  Amado has been seen on TEDxKC, TEDxYouth, and is the 2017 Charlotte St. Foundation Performing Arts Fellow.  Along with his wife, Karen Lisondra, he co-directed and composed a theatrical production last year called We are the Landscape, and will be co-directing The Storytelling Project at UMKCs theatre department this winter.

J. Ashley Miller is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. His genre-bending trans-modern work has been performed everywhere from YJs to the Kauffman Performing Arts Center to the MoMa PS1 in NYC. Ashley utilizes a diverse range of technologies, techniques, and collaborators to access obscure facets of the human emotional landscape. His new operatic theatre work is sure to provide Kansas City with some must-see programming in 2016. Ashley was a recipient of Charlotte Street Foundations 2016 Generative Performing Award.

Jeff Harshbarger is a prolific composer and bandleader who was voted 2011 Person of the Year by Plasticsax.com and Best Bassist by Pitch Magazine. Jeff has had quite an eclectic career, as he has recorded and performed across the globe with such varied artists as Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Bobby Watson, Darol Anger, Allison Miller, Curtis Fuller, Forever Tango, Eugene Chadborne, Milt Abel, Tango Lorca, Jimmy Carl Black, Krystle Warren, Snuff Jazz, Brad Cox, Nathan Granner, Ghosty, The People's Liberation Big Band of the Greater Kansas City Area and Forrest Whitlow. He is a co-founder of Tzigane Music, an artist-run collective and record label, and is the curator of Jeff Harshbarger Presents: An Alternative Jazz Series, promoting new improvised music in Kansas City. Jeff has received numerous grants and awards, including The Kennedy Center's Betty Carter Fellowship, the Steans Institute Fellowship, the Creative Capital Foundation's Professional Development Grant and the 2015 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award. Jeff also hosts Wednesday's Jazz in the Afternoon from 1-3 pm on 90.1 FM KKFI.
