ARI SHAPIRO: HOMEWARD
"Who knew he could sing?" -The Washington Post
"If he does want to quit that day job, he'll do just fine," -The Oregonian
"He defies all we hear about the ugliness of radio people," -GQ
As a reporter, NPR's "All Things Considered" host (and former Portlander) Ari Shapiro has witnessed wars and revolutions. Inspired by his experiences around the globe, his new show Homeward features Shapiro singing the songs of upheaval, patriotism and hope, from places that are less far away than they seem.
When Ari is not in front of a microphone on a stage, he sits in front of a microphone as a host for NPR's "All Things Considered", the most listened-to radio program in America. He's reported from above the Arctic Circle and aboard Air Force One. He's covered wars in Iraq, Ukraine, and Israel, and he has filed stories from five continents (Sorry, Australia!). He is also a frequent guest performer with Portland's Pink Martini - in which he has appeared on four of their albums - singing in several languages. Shapiro made his debut with the band at the Hollywood Bowl in 2009 and has since toured the world with them, performing in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall in London, L'Olympia in Paris, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C, and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Homeward plays Nov 16-18 at Portland's intimate World Trade Center Auditorium. Music direction for Homeward is provided by noted musical artist Gabriel Mangiante (piano) with a band featuring some of Portland's finest musicians: Pansy Chang (cello), Leah Hinchcliff (bass), Dom Castillo (guitar), Brent Follis (drums).
As an added treat, either Storm Large or China Forbes will join Ari for a song or two each performance!
$20 Student Rush (with ID) nightly at the door.
The venue is wheelchair accessible.
Online sales at brownpapertickets end 3 hours prior to showtime. Unless otherwise noted, tickets will be available at the door. All seats are general admission.
Thursday night's performance is SOLD OUT. The 9 pm Nov. 18 show has been cancelled.
