Susan Murphy: "LADYLIKE"
If music wore a pussy hat, what kind of songs would she sing?
In LADYLIKE, Susan Murphy dons her musical pink ears to explore the answer to that question by singing songs written exclusively by women. Tellingly, the answers come more in songs of perspective than of protest. Indeed, from Laura Nyro to LaVern Baker, from Joan Baez to Bobbie Gentry, the songwriters featured in LADYLIKE present life and loving from a saucy, sexy, singularly female point of view. In Murphy's hands, their compositions shine as living, breathing portraits of women and as a testament to being a woman at this curious moment in time.
Murphy will be accompanied by Seth Saltzman on piano, Ann Klein on guitars, and Liany Mateo on bass.
Susan Murphy is a New York-based performer and writer who has been seen on theatre and music stages for the past 3 decades. She is most known for her original performance work, in which she blurs the boundaries of music, theatre, comedy, and performance art to create what she calls 'performance memoir'. In 2011, she introduced her full-length rock and roll play Girl/Group: A Daughters Tale, a performance memoir about her mother's experiences as a member of an all-girl doo-wop group in the late 1950's. Premiering at the world renowned (and personally beloved) La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York, Girl/Group has since also been presented at the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre. Susan has worked as an actor in the New York theatre since having graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied at the Experimental Theatre Wing. She has appeared in productions ranging from traditional musical theatre to literary adaptations, from sketch comedy to avant garde performance and dance. She has also performed at the Whitney Museum in Manhattan, on the Mainstage of the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, MA, at Time/Space Limited Warehouse in Hudson, NY, with the Liberty State Opera in Jersey City, NJ, and at the Centro per la Sperimentazione e Ricerca Teatrale in Pontedera, Italy.
As a singer, she can best be described as an actor of modern musical literature and has collaborated with such inspiring musical artists as Lisa Sokolov, Mary McBride, Diane Garisto, Kenny Werner, members of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Aaron Dugan of Matisyahu, Anders Nilsson, Eli Yamin, William Parker, Bob Dorough, and Jon Spurney, among others. She is thrilled to have even once sung with the pop icon Lulu!

Downtown's intimate supper-club Pangea is the ultimate in alt, playing home to some of the best in alt cabaret. The New York Times recently called it a bohemian oasis not unlike the fabled Max's Kansas City from days gone by."
