Frida Kahlo: Long Live Life!
On the Day of the Dead, Frida Kahlo waits for her guests and while she cooks, evokes the memories of Diego, Rockefeller, and Trotsky, while confessing her opinion about many facets of life. She resurrects her inevitable memory of her accident and the nearness of death in her life, making this a monologue captured by her pain, passion and humor. Frida laughs, cries, sings, dances, seduces, and incites joy, reminding us that we have the incomparable gift of still being alive. As much of the text of the play was taken from the letters and writings of Frida, they are her honest impressions of the countries she traveled to, her opinion of other artists and intellectuals, and her complicated relationship with her husband as well as with her homeland of Mexico. Like her paintings, her observations are impossible to ignore and bring us into the mind and being of who Frida Kahlo was, illuminating inspirations behind her paintings, and the undeniable triumph she had over her difficulties. We are taken to her painfully romantic world where her passion for life in spite of it is what brings her to life in this spirited production, crowned in flowers and terrifically brave.
