ORDINARY DAYS, presented by Relephant Theatre
Featuring a cast and creative team comprised of Jessie award-winners and local favourites, the Relephants are thrilled to now bring the best of contemporary Manhattan to the Lower Mainland.
Adam Gwon's ORDINARY DAYS is a taut and tender one-act musical, sung-through with a score that's often as riotous and colourful as Times Square, and yet as yearning as the empty space in New York's post-9/11 skyline. Here, the ordinary is revealed to be anything but: as the lives of four young adults collide, this urban fable challenges its inhabitants, and celebrates the extraordinary that exists in every invaluable moment.
Although lemonade will not be served this time 'round, audience members can indeed expect another immersive experience. The Relephants will employ a non-traditional configuration of the Carousel performance space, and director Julie McIsaac and designer Jessie van Rijn are excited to host patrons at the venue in an entirely new way. Honey-voiced Alison MacDonald returns to Vancouver to play secret-keeping Claire, while Blood Brothers' Shane Snow takes on earnest architect Jason, who struggles to understand Claire's reluctance to commit. Steven Greenfield (last seen at TUTS in Titanic) will appear as the whole-heartedly bumbling artist Warren, and rounding out the quartet is Jennie Neumann, whose powerful pipes will ignite quick-witted grad student Deb.
Fresh off a directing apprenticeship at Bard on the Beach (Assistant to Johnna Wright on the music-infused The Merry Wives of Windsor) director Julie McIsaac will also join the cast each night to play the show's piano accompaniment, while she and Greenfield will share the show's musical direction credit.
It promises to be an evening of fine entertainment, the equivalent of a perfect first date: with quick-flowing conversation, frank laughter, achingly slow, warming smiles and refreshingly honest music. A great start to the new year!
