SEPTEMBER 2 - BETWEEN WORLDS
SCHUBERT Fantasy in F minor for Piano Four Hands, D. 940 BEETHOVEN Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No. 2 SCHUBERT Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major, D. 898
Although Franz Schubert died only one year after Beethovens death, his thirty-first and final year of life was one the most artistically productive and inspired of any composer in history. His musical language ranges from the tragic melancholy of the Fantasy in F minor for Piano Four Hands to the lyrical heroicism of the colossal Piano Trio in B-flat major. Beethovens fiery Violin Sonata in C minor highlights the contrast between these two composers musical worlds.
SEPTEMBER 3 - BEYOND VIRTUOSITY
RAVEL Sonata for Violin and Cello (1922) BACH Partita No. 2 in D minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1004 BRAHMS Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25
Bach, Brahms, and Ravel are not only known for their incredible music but also for expanding the technical limits of the instruments they wrote for. These three works display the creative virtuosity that made each composer a powerful force during their time. This program includes Bachs monumental Chaconne for solo violin and Brahms thrilling gypsy-inspired Piano Quartet in G minor.
