The Baltimore Waltz by Paula Vogel, presented by Theatre Coup d'Etat
Winner of the Obie Award, Paula Vogels The Baltimore Waltz is a darkly comedic fantasy about daring to find hope, joy, and even happiness in the most dire of circumstances. Based on the love and adventures of a brother and sister, one of whom is diagnosed with a deadly virus that sends the two of them spinning off to Europe to find romance and a cure.
The Baltimore Waltz is Paula Vogels perfect, imperfect memory of her brother Carl and the fantastical trip to Europe they planned, but never took. The play lives somewhere between fantasy and reality, between farce and tragedy, between the remembered and the imagined. Our set, sound, and costume design will reflect the fantastical journey that never actually leaves a hospital, inviting the audience into a world where childlike imagination transforms a hospital bed into a Bistro in Paris, and an IV drip into the Eiffel Tower. This play itself is a comedy, but it is also a meditation on grief, coping, and hope.
Two-time Ivey Award-winning Theatre Coup dEtat maintains its tradition of creating a dynamic, actor-driven production. Combined with the intimate seating of Springhouse Ministry Centers North Sanctuary, Theatre Coup dEtats production of The Baltimore Waltz is another cant-miss experience.
