Symphony Parnassus Season Finale Concert
Music Director & renowned principal bassoonist of SF Symphony Stephen Paulson conducts a dazzling art-inspired program featuring:
STEFAN CWIK: "LUZ DORADA: MUSIC AFTER THREE PAINTINGS BY EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ CALZADO" (WORLD PREMIERE)
RACHMANINOFF: "RHAPSODY ON A THEME OF PAGANINI" ELLIOT WUU, SOLOIST WINNER, PARNASSUS-SFCM COMPETITION
MUSSORGSKY/RAVEL: "PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION"
By extraordinary coincidence, all three works on this program were conceived by their composers from the inspiration of other artists (two painters and the third another virtuoso musician)
Pre-season planning to program "Pictures at an Exhibition" triggered our composer-in-residence Stefan Cwik (SF Conservatory of Music faculty) to draw compositional inspiration from a set of oil paintings by gifted Mexican artist Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado. Calzado's paintings are rich with bright colors and many detailed shapes (please check him out online), and we are honored and excited to be performing this world premiere of Cwik's completed musical canvas.
Our Bay Area's 17-year old Elliot Wuu will conclude his springtime concert jet-setting across America and into Europe with a reprise of his breathtaking performances of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Elliot has received nationwide exposure on NPR's "From The Top" broadcast program; his performances are leaving a trail of bedazzled audiences. (Please check him out too, online.)
