SF Mandolin Orchestra - Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (San Francisco)
This concert will feature the stunning Stabat Mater by Italian composer Giovanni Pergolesi (1710-1736), as well as Adagio for Strings by American composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981).
The Stabat Mater, Pergolesis most celebrated work, was composed in 1736, the last year of his short life. The 12-movement piece, written for soprano, alto, and orchestra, was composed as a Good Friday meditation in honor of the Virgin Mary, and was one of the most frequently printed musical works of the 18th century. The orchestra will be joined for this performance by two renowned Bay Area singers, soprano Susan Gundunas and alto Twila Ehmcke.
There will be two performances -
