Inventive, restless, and passionately artistic; influenced by the ex-pat writers of the early 20th century, obscure political songs of the '60s and 1980s alt-pop, singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell has gifted the music world with a hugely successful folk opera (Hadestown) and several themed albums: 2012's Young Man in America, 2013's Child Ballads (which won a BBC Folk Award for Best Traditional Song), and 2014's XOA. The common thread is her deep engagement with the world around her, leading her to tackle big themes with the same emotional intimacy with which most artists describe their inner lives.
