Cabaret in Captivity
Cabaret in Captivity
Monday April 24th at 7pm
Being performed as part of the National Jewish Theater Foundation's Holocaust Theater International Initiative, Remembrance Day Play Readings
In spite of all the harassment, dirt, ugliness, and horror, or rather, exactly because of them, we all sought stimulus through which it would be possible to live and draw hope. It was in the cabaret that we forgot about the powerlessness of our daily lives - Terezin survivor
Songs and texts written and performed in the Terezin Ghetto With: Craig Anderson, Seth Gilman, Jeremy Lawrence, Jenny Lee Mitchell, Andrianna Smela, Katarina Vizina and special appearance by Barbara Maier Gustern. A co production: Mad Jenny Theater and Untitled Theater Company #61 Conceived by Edward Einhorn and curated and directed by Jenny Lee Mitchell with assistance from Barbara Maier Gustern. Musical direction: Maria Dessena. Terezin was the final stop for more than 30,000 Central and Western European Jews, most from Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany who perished within its walls. For thousands more it was only a way station on the journey to the slave-labor and death camps. Yet it was also a place where many prisoners became intensely aware of the meaning and power or art. During those years in Terezin/Theresienstadt, a vigorous cultural life emerged. Not all prisoners participated in the cultural life and only a small fraction of the works produced there has survived.
Cabaret and Captivity features newly discovered works created in Terezin as well as works that have been performed around the world to honor the artists who participated in this spiritual resistance.
