Madonna of the Mills ~ Free Screening
America has a nasty secret. All of those cute puppies that are sold in pet stores come from "puppy mills." Their mothers spend their entire lives in tiny, unsanitary cages, never walked, never petted, never doing anything but making puppies . When these dogs can no longer produce litters or money for their owners, they are put to death stoned, shot, drowned or starved.
"Madonna of the Mills" is a documentary about Laura, an office manager from Staten Island, who stumbled on this secret four years ago and vowed to save as many of these breeding dogs as she possibly could. Laura has now rescued over 2,000 dogs from Amish and Mennonite farmers in Pennsylvania. In the process, she has forever changed her life and the lives of those families fortunate enough to adopt one of these remarkable "puppy mill" survivors.

Donna Zeigfinger is the guardian of Rudy, an adopted puppy mill rescue, who decided to take action after years of trying unsuccessfully to find help rehabilitating Rudy with various online group sites and classes. Donna started a Meetup Group at the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL) where Rudy was taken after a 2008 raid on a West Virginia puppy mill and where he was adopted by Donna & her husband. Now, the group meets once a month by conference call with Jeni Grant - a trainer who specializes in shy dogs (mostly mill dogs). Due to its popularity, a class has started at Your Dogs Friend http://www.yourdogsfriend.info.
Kathleen Summers has worked with the Puppy Mills campaign at The Humane Society of the United States since 2006 and is currently the director of outreach and research for the campaign. She and her rescued puppy mill dog, Brandy, appear briefly in Madonna of the Mills. Kathleen is a graduate of The American University and Carnegie Mellon University.
