2017 Repertory Showcase
Lake Tahoe Dance Collective (LTDC) opens its 2017 season with the 9th Annual Repertory Program, at the Tahoe Art Haus April 7th - 9th. The evening celebrates diversity of style including classical, contemporary works and legacy pieces from pioneers who paved the way for todays talented choreographers.
Performances will feature a diverse program including Founding Artistic Director Christin Hannas Haydn Symphony No. 87 with guest principal Calvin Thomas (Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Austin), Erick Hawkins Heyoka (1981). Additionally, guest artist Daiane Lopes da Silva of Kinetech Arts will present her solo Reset, and a world premiere, FaceTime, by Deborah Lohse (Doug Elkins Dance).
Hannas Haydn Symphony No. 87 kicks off a compelling and beautiful evening off dance. Presented in in partnership with the Lake Tahoe Music Festival last August, Hanna has added a third section, the Allegro Vivace. This airy and classically-driven romp through Haydns score offers LTDCs dancers a chance to showcase their virtuosity in neoclassical ballet. It is also highlighted by guest Calvin Thomas in the male principal role along with LTDCs own Elena Prisco in the female principal role.
While classicism lies at the heart of this troupe and its Director, it is also complimented by contemporary modern works. We take our classical training very seriously, says Hanna, But we also use that as a foundation to jump off from when diving in to other work. Ballet dancers have the utmost knowledge of their movement, so taking that off-balance and in different directions is really exciting for both the dancers and the audience.
Long-time LTDC collaborator Deborah Lohse has had the advantage of working with LTDC since its foundation in 2009 (then Tahoe Youth Ballet). Her piece "Face Time plays with the growing intimate relationships we have with our digital devices. Inviting the phones onstage to become a part of the performance experience as a source for learning, support and expression. FaceTime explores how unlimited access to the world influences the expansion and contraction of our own individual universes and our perception of place and belonging.
An excerpt of Heyoka, by American mid-century modern dance icon Erick Hawkins opens the second half of the program. This work from 1981 combines Hawkins common themes of light and floating within a large dynamic group.
The most contemporary piece of the evening comes in a solo, Reset, by Daiane Lopes da Silva, founder of San Francisco - based Kinetech Arts. Created last summer during an artistic residency in Greece, the Reset is a meditation on transformation and revelation inspired by concepts of Yoga and Tai Ji.
Im exceptionally proud of our program and see it has our greatest offering yet, explains Hanna, It showcases a variety of works that broaden the horizon for our audience, while allowing the unique and individual talents of our local dancers to shine on stage.
