We [Heart] Sticks and Stones
Two short comic operas by Ned Rorem:
"Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters" based on a melodrama by Gertrude Stein
"Bertha" play by Kenneth Koch
If Mommy and Daddy won't let you play with guns, we suggest you use a sharp stick.
In its debut production, the Black Box Opera Theater ensemble uses sticks, stones, swords, and guns to present the Seattle premiere of two operas by American composer Ned Rorem: "Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters," melodrama by Gertrude Stein, and "Bertha," play by Kenneth Koch.
They are Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters, but that's the least of their worries as they become enmeshed in a friendly little game of murder. Everyone sees dead people.
Mad Queen Bertha loves, loves, loves to go to war. She ignores her advisors, the will of her people, and even common sense, so she can take her army out for a spin. Mission accomplished!
