"Forgiving the Unforgivable" by Kai Eckhardt, musician and visual artist
"Forgiving the Unforgivable" features Kai Eckhardt, a solo instrumentalist working with layers of rhythm and harmony to create moving soundscapes complemented by a poignant video presentation. The video gives three extraordinary accounts of people who overcame the unthinkable while managing to reclaim their lives after being confronted with the most impossible of circumstances. The stories are: 1) Eva Mozes-Kor, a concentration camp survivor who confronted and forgave her former prison guard at Auschwitz; 2) The Wellbriety movement, a group of Native Americans walking 7000 miles across the US, coming to terms with cross-generational trauma; and 3) The aftermath of the Pennsylvania school shooting of 2006 where Amish parents pardoned the killer of their daughters and reached out to his family in forgiveness. Following Kai's multi-media presentation, the audience will be invited to join an informal conversation shedding light on how we as individuals cope with forgiving the unforgivable.

While the subject matter contains grim accounts, the use of explicitly graphic images is avoided. Instead of passing judgment on the injustice involved, the video highlights the inherent resilience of the human spirit in the face of extreme adversity. Audience members are encouraged to reflect on several aspects of this subject within the context of the world we live in today. By doing so the artist re-imagines improvised music by confronting a central issue of our time, namely how we as a society choose to respond to inevitable tensions arising from the realities of our lives. It is nothing less than the choice for war or peace where the battleground lies within our very own hearts and minds.
About Kai Eckhardt: For almost three decades Kai has been a world traveler. After graduation from Berklee College of Music in Boston his touring life began and he yearly spent 120 days on the road. Originally a jazz and funk bass player, he expanded into world music, collaborating with musicians from Europe to India and the Middle East. The roots of Kai's interest in social activism come from his cultural upbringing. He was raised both in Germany and Liberia where he experienced life on both sides of the great social divide, living among the haves and the have-nots. Somewhere between culture clash and future shock his artistic mind flourished. Forgiving the unforgiveable is Kai's artistic appeal inviting us to re-examine our stance in life as we take into account the examples set by those who have successfully transformed their suffering into a state of grace. https://kaieckhardt.com
