An Evening with T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh & Friends - A Birthday Benefit
On Saturday, October 13, 2012, COSBY / That's So Raven / In Living Color star T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh celebrates her 50th birthday with song, dance, poetry, drama and comedy, in "An Evening with T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh & Friends: A Birthday Benefit for St. Sabina Academy." The celebration also will recognize organizations combating violence, promoting peace and increasing productivity among the young in the Englewood / Auburn/Gresham neighborhoods where she grew up including the Community of St. Sabina, where Rev. Michael Pfleger, leads many of the area's peace initiatives. Dress to impress if you like, but bring your dancing shoes, because T'Keyah plans to finish the evening dancing to her favorite jams.
Doors open at 7:30PM. The show begins at 8:00PM. There will be a cash bar, silent auction, treats and other items for sale. In lieu of birthday presents, Keymáh is asking that patrons make donations to the charities being honored. All tickets are $35 at the door.

For those traveling from out of town: Midway is the closest airport to St. Sabina and there are many hotels nearby. The Hyatt McCormick Place is the closest hotel is the host and if you are coming from O'Hare, it is more convenient than staying downtown.
PERFORMERS: T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh - In addition to her impressive television work, T'Keyah has performed in over 50 stage productions including The Goodman Theatre's productions of "A Christmas Carol" and "A Raisin in the Sun," The Court Theater's production of "Playboy of the West Indies," Light Operaworks' "Land of Smiles" and her popular self-penned shows, "Some of My Best Friends," "T'Keyah Live," and "Don't Get Me Started." Before leaving Chicago to do her first television series, T'Keyah played Dinah Washington in ETA's popular show, "The Regal Theatre," danced with the Najwa Dance Corps, and sang with Singsation and Rafo International Combo. She was the 1985-86 Miss Black Illinois. Najwa Dance Corps - "A living archive of dance history", Najwa Dance Corps presents an exciting repertoire that spans the eras of the African-American heritage. Always entertaining, the company's performances showcase a breathtaking diversity of dance styles in a historical context. From the rituals of traditional Africa to the glamorous chorus girls of the swing era, Najwa Dance Corps brings joyous, fascinating life to the different cultures that have contributed to contemporary American dance. T'Keyah joined the Najwa Dance Corps after filling in for a company member as a Regalette in "The Regal Theater."
Timothy Paul Miller "TheExtratainer", aka Tim P.M. - a Chicago native, majored in film and television production and trained in improvisation. Also holding a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, his experience as stand-up comic/singer and original member of the Mary Wong Comedy Team led him to be a part of the Coors Light Comedy Commandos. Tim has performed at countless clubs, colleges, universities, military bases, cruise ships, major theatres and stadiums. He has been an opening act for such legendary artists as Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Patti LaBelle, Kool and the Gang, Chaka Khan, Kid Creole and The Coconuts, The Four Tops, Roy Ayers, The Gap Band, and The Temptations. Cynda Williams - is perhaps best known for her debut film MO' BETTER BLUES directed by Spike Lee. Her song from the that film, HARLEM BLUES, went #1 on the R&B charts. That film opened the door to her next performance in Carl Franklin's ONE FALSE MOVE - Cynda has since appeared in numerous films including: Carl Franklin's ONE FALSE MOVEStewart Wade's TRU LOVED, John Nolte's BEAUTIFUL LOSER, Salvador Litvak's WHEN DO WE EAT, Billy Wirth's MACARTHUR PARK, P.J. Castellante's RELAX...IT'S JUST SEX, Darin Scott's CAUGHT UP and Wesley Strick's THE TIE THAT BINDS. She has also performed memorable quality television roles including: BET's HIDDEN BLESSINGS, LIFETIME'S THE COURAGE TO LOVE, HBO's DOROTHY DANDRIDGE, Oprah Winfrey's ABC miniseries, THE WEDDING and PBS' TALES OF THE CITY. Along with Carl Franklin's ONE FALSE MOVE. Cynda and T'Keyah first met when they played singers together in a staged reading of a film that would have starred Esther Rolle.
TC Carson - is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the suave Kyle Barker on the hit sitcom "Living Single". He has now taken his destiny in his own hands to pursue his first love, music, with his debut album "Truth". The 14 song CD finds him flexing an elastic vocal range that stretches from rich baritone to a surprising falsetto. TC enlisted great musicians on this project such as former Prince sideman Andre Cymone, Patrice Rushen and Ndugu. T.C. Carson is a rarity in the entertainment business. His versatility as an actor is well known, but sometimes overshadows his singing. Carson's first love is singing. "I am a vocalist who happens to be an actor". His whole focus since leaving television has been his music he says. "I really see myself as a storyteller." His acting career is rooted in dramatic and musical theatre. Carson has performed/ appeared on stage in plays and musicals such as Hair, The Colored Museum, The Wiz, Dreamgirls, Ain't Misbehavin', Gospel at Colonus and Once on This Island. Film credits include 20th Century Fox military thriller "U-571", and the cult-favorites "Final Destination 2" and "Living Large". His 5 year stint on "Living Single" earned him a 1998 and 1997 NAACP IMAGE award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The show continues to run in syndication to popular demand and has recently been picked up in Europe and Australia. Sherry Scott - born and raised in the city of Chicago, Sherry's music career has spanned over four decades in several genres of music. Her debut as a vocalist was with the AACM, (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musician) which was founded by Muhal" Richard" Abrams. She performed and recorded with the big band and with the AACM's Joseph Jarmin Quintet, whose album received 5 Stars in Downbeat Magazine featuring Sherry Scott's vocals on the global sensation hit "As If It Were the Seasons". Sherry became one of the founding members of a Chicago based group called Earth Wind and Fire, making her the "original" female vocalist. She wrote and sung the group's first hit, "I Think about Loving You" and went on to record several albums with them. Sherry traveled the United States, Europe and Africa dazzling the audiences with standards as well as original material. She settled in New York City in the beginning of 2000 taking on the role of a creative partner and singer for a thirteen piece Mambo band. This African American Mambo group was known as Hai Reezolution; Sherry performed and recorded many well-known jazz standards with a Mambo/Salsa arrangement.
jeff obafemi carr - is known as "The Media Scientist" for his work as an Award-Winning Playwright, Actor, Director, and Social Commentator with over 100 commentaries aired on National Public Radio. He has appeared on TV-One's Black Men Revealed and was Co-Star of the 2006 Sony Pictures film The Second Chance. carr is a graduate of Tennessee State University and the Founder of Nashville's Amun Ra Theatre. The author of a dozen plays, including Route 66: Finding Nat King Cole, directed by T'Keyah, carr's current project is He Ain't Heavy, his feature film directorial debut. He Ain't Heavy takes on the taboo subject of fraternity hazing, shot in revelatory found-footage style. It recently won the TN Spirit Award for Best Feature Film at the Nashville Film Festival, and hopefully will appear in theaters near you soon. www.heaintheavymovie.com.
Sharon P. Smith - is a singer/song writer from Chicago, IL. She has performed in church choirs since childhood and performed in the Petrillo Band Shell, for Pope John Paul II and for State Farm Insurance at corporate events. Her early years included voice training at St. Sabina Church under the tutelage of Bob Neal. During the '80s Sharon published a solo recording of "I heard It" and performed in the band "Quest" with T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh. She has been a highly sought after performer in many live entertainment venues such as Blue 47, Dixie's Kitchen, Cafe Luna and Martin Luther King Scholarship functions sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Reginald Muhammad (Reggie Reg) - is a Chicago born Comedian/Impressionist who appeared in the celebrated tour of 3 Ways to Get a Husband with Billy Dee Williams Shirley Murdock, Lenny Williams, and Leon. His stand-up performance amazes audiences with over 100 outstanding impressions of celebrities, politicians and sports figures including: Barack Obama, Frank Sinatra, Morgan Freeman, Ted Koppel, Sammy Davis Jr., Harry Carrey, Peter Jennings, Chris Rock, Al Pacino, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, Bernie Mac, Chris Tucker, DMX Sylvester Stallone, Marv Alpert, George Bush, and Bill Clinton. Reggie has performed at countless comedy clubs and arenas including: Madison Square Garden, Universal Amphitheater, MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Zanies, and All Jokes Aside. Mitzi Montgomery - a singer/dancer/ entertainer for over 35 years, hails from Chicago, IL. and has traveled all over the country and throughout Europe singing and entertaining audiences from various nationalities. She has been a vocalist with several different bands and genres of music ranging from rock to polka as well as latin music. Recently she has also added Zumba instructor to her list of accomplishments.
Cool School Inc. - is living legend Clarence Boykins' many member jazz ensemble. A performer for nearly seventy years, Boykins enjoys making each show the best. The mission of THE COOL SCHOOL, INC., in partnership with the Arts and Entertainment community, is; To provide to clients the performer(s) that most explicitly match the requirements of the client's occasion. To recognize, encourage, and promote the talents of established performers, and to invigorate, activate, and encourage the talents and desires of novice performers. Cool School, Inc. will be the house band for Tim and T'Keyah's upcoming show, "T&T."
