The Alchemy of Woman
The Alchemy of Woman presents Mari Sandovals Flamenco Dance Theater and Carolyn Kruegers Gulistan Dance Theater in a celebration of women and dance from Uzbekistan to Spain, featuring writings of Langston Hughes (1902-1967) and Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936). Langston and Lorca were artistically involved in the worlds of women and dance Hughes in Uzbekistan and Lorca in Spain. Though these contemporaries never met, they were connected upon Hughes arrival in Spain when he was given a copy of the late Lorcas collection of poems, the Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads). Hughes later published English translations of Lorcas two masterpieces, the Romancero Gitano and Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding). Mari Sandoval was trained in Spain and the U.S. by such notables as Carmelita Maracci, Enrique El Cojo, Carmen Mora, Inesita, Nana Lorca, Lupe del Rio and Roberto Amaral. Mari performed with Roberto Amarals Ballet Espanol de Los Angeles, as principal dancer and was the companys ballet mistress. She has performed in theaters such as the Lobero, Wilshire Ebell, Japan American, Fox, and Smothers as well as numerous other venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. Mari Sandoval was a choreographer for the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts through 2009, and has created choreographies inspired by Garcia Lorcas work, such as Lorca, Child of the Moon, an opera, Yerma, Donna Rosita la Soltera, Blood Wedding, Las Mujeres de Lorca, as well as other annual productions produced in Spanish and English. www.laflamencamari.com
Now in its 18th year, Carolyn Kruegers Gulistan Dance Theater presents traditional and original dances rooted in Central Asian culture, with a specialty in the refined and opulent dances of Uzbekistan. Carolyn belongs to the first wave of Western dancers (half a dozen) who undertook intensive training in Uzbekistan during the 1980s and 90s. Her pioneering work as a performer and choreographer has earned her several nominations for the Lester Horton Award, along with two grants from ArtsLink. Under the grants, Ms. Krueger trained, performed and resided in Tashkent with master choreographer, Peoples Artist of Uzbekistan Viloyat Akilova. Carolyn and Gulistan have appeared on stages across the U.S., in Europe, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. This year, the 8-member ensemble has been invited to perform at festivals in Malaysia and Belarus. www.gulistandance.com
