Berkeley High African American Studies Dept. Presents "Kumba - The Orphaned Child"
KUMBA - The Orphaned Child A West African legend....Once upon a time...In the kingdom of the great Mali Empire, a man of royalty, who was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kumba. lost his kind and gentle wife. By African tradition, he remarried and not only gained a wife, but another daughter, Penda who was quite spoiled and disrespectful. For a while, the new wife was good, then she began to be very demanding and domineering to her husband and Kumba, but nice to Penda. (If this reminds you of the story of Cinderella, you good.)
In this dance/drama, on will be able to a the Haitian dance of the dead, Aztec, sabar dance from Senegal, Macru and Kassa from Guinea, modern dance, hip hop, a narration that takes you on the journey or being there, and more.
Audiences are thrilled and inspired by these young performers. Come see 250 students in the 2000 seat Berkeley Community Theater.
