"Chapters in an Improbable Life" with Robert Richards
A madcap whirl through a legendary illustrator's, improbable celebrity laden life and career.
Robert W Richards has been drawing professionally for more than half a century! First as a Fashion Illustrator covering the Collections in New York, Paris and Rome when Fashion was FASHION. Then on to celebrity and society portraits and male erotica. These wildly divergent assignments have led to a dizzying array of mis-adventures featuring among many others Silent Screen Siren Louise Brooks, Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn, Lena Horne, the US Army, Yves St Laurent, Basquiat, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Anita ODay, Ann-Margret, etc. etc. and more etc. And yet he lives!
At a very young age, already an outsider, an isolated gay kid living in an aggressively straight, French speaking community in Maine. I soon learned that my artistic ability coupled with my rebellious streak were the only things that offered me any possibility of a future. Slowly I started to invent myself and struggled alone until at sixteen I won a scholarship to a prestigious art school in Boston. Off I went, ready to begin my new life!
Today all the disparate elements of my five decades of drawing have meshed. I still do a small amount of fashion and beauty illustration, portrait commissions and male erotica but best of all I draw the beautiful people who move gracefully in and out of my life.
