Cape Breton musicians Andrea Beaton accompanied by her mother, Betty Lou Beaton, bring their lively traditional tunes to the Canadian American Club for a Downeast style dance. Come learn the straightforward Mabou square set or simply sit and enjoy the music in the authentic atmosphere of the Canadian American Club. It's such a treat to have both of these remarkable representatives of the Cape Breton style!
Andrea Beaton comes from a long line of musicians, composers and dancers. She is an award-winning fiddler, tune composer and recording artist who is known for her powerful bow and driving style. She tours and teaches internationally and is in great demand as a teacher at music camps and fiddling/dancing workshops.
She has released 5 solo albums, one duo album with her father, Kinnon Beaton, and a book of her original tunes. she also recorded an album with her family "The Beaton family of Mabou" in 2007 for the Smithsonian Institute. Most of her solo albums were nominated for awards, and her 2010 CD, 'Branches,' won the Canadian East Coast Music Awards Instrumental Recording of the Year. On her most recent release 'With Betty & Dave' Andrea is accompanied on this lively traditional album by her mom, Betty (MacMaster) Beaton on piano and Dave MacIsaac on guitar- two of Cape Breton's most revered and tasteful musicians.
Andrea travels the globe, sharing her culture as well as exploring and writing contemporary tunes. Her music, dance and comical stories are sure to delight any audience.
Betty Lou Beaton began playing the piano at the age of five. Although she has a couple of years of piano training, all her Cape Breton piano playing is done by ear. At fourteen years of age, she started playing dances with her brother Buddy and has been accompanying fiddlers for dancers ever since. Betty has taught at the Ceilidh Trail School of Music in Inverside Cape Breton, at Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend in Washington, USA, and Ceolas in South Uist, Scotland. She has played on numerous recordings including the Smithsonian Folkways recording "The Beaton Family of Mabou: Cape Breton Fiddle and Piano Music" and, most recently, her daughter Andrea's 2016 release "Andrea Beaton with Betty and Dave". Betty is most often paired with her husband, fiddler Kinnon Beaton, and the duo is always in demand to play for dances in Cape Breton.
