Morbid Curiosities: Collections of the Uncommon and the Bizarre, An Illustrated lecture with Paul Gambino
Date: Monday, November 14th Time: 7pm Admission: $5 Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn NY
Hosted by Evan Michelson with Ryan Matthew Cohn, Nathan Roberts, Dani Devereux, D. L. Marian, Steve Erenberg, Daniel Erenberg and Calvin Von Crush (all featured in the book) the evening will be a dynamic, informative, and entertaining glimpse into the world of serious collecting of the macabre from a diverse group of collectors.
Topics to be introduced and discussed will include the obligatory How did you get started in this niche of collecting? and What was the oddest item you have ever had in your collection or have seen in someone elses collection? to the more sophisticated areas like Have you ever turned down a piece because of moral or ethical reasons? and What have been some of the recent consequences of collectors who sell illegal and/or stolen items online.
Each of the six collectors will bring their own unique spin on a group of collectors who many lay people have painted with a broad brush. In addition to the Roundtable section of the evening, the collectors will also bring three of their favorite pieces to put on display and discuss with the audience.
For the past 20 years Gambino has been the Editor-in-Chief of the pop culture magazine titles at Enoble Media, including Rebel Ink, Urban Ink, Skin and Ink and Gener8. I have recently switch over and am now the the Head of Video Production at Inked magazine (Quadra Media).
Pauls first book, SCRAP CITY: SCRAPBOOKING FOR SUBURBAN DIVAS AND SMALL TOWN REBELS (SOHO Publishing, 2006), was a semi-finalist for the Independent Publisher Book award in the Hobby/Crafts category and was touted as giving the craft of scrapbooking a youthful, cutting-edge makeover.
Paul has been an avid collector of the bizarre for over 20-years with an extensive collection of Victorian memorial photographs, antique funeraria, mug shots and vintage religious items (including a life sized St. Sebastian and Virgin Mary salvaged from a 19th century church in Pennsylvania). The past two decades of serious collecting has allowed Paul to gain the trust of some of the worlds largest macabre collectors. These relationships have allowed him to have his second book published, MORBID CURIOSITIES: COLLECTIONS OF THE UNCOMMON AND THE BIZARRE. Amazon sums the book up like this; Morbid Curiosities is an insight into the strange world of collectors of the macabre. Centered on 18 collections, with extensive interviews with each collector and specially shot imagery detailing their objects, this is a fascinating showcase of bizarre and intriguing objects. ____________________________________________
