Global Conversations Presented by Violinist Kala Ramnath and Saxophonist George Brooks
Fusing Indian classical music and jazz has met with mixed results over the years. For a long time, it seemed that a combination of these disparate styles could only result in overly aggressive fusion music. Over time, a more organic musical merge has taken place thanks to artists like George Brooks and Kala Ramnath.
Kala Ramnath - belongs to a violin dynasty from India- a unique musical lineage of seven generations which straddles both the classical systems of the subcontinent. Here is what Jazzwise magazine had to say about her... "If Mozart had been transported to the South Asian subcontinent this is what he and improvised Western classical music might have sounded like. This comparison is not thrown in to befuddle or impress. Kala Ramnath is a musician of giant-like qualities."
George Brooks - is a prolific and diverse saxophonist and composer, acclaimed for successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music. He is the founder of several important Indian fusion groups. "Bristling with east meets west polytonality and rhythmic intrigue and tinged with a Trane-like spirituality Blowing gorgeous tones and fluidly unraveling complex ideas(Brooks) succeeds to a startling and almost rapturous degree."
