Voyeur: An Urban Rhapsody
The Fishtank performance studio is diving  yet again into an area of unexplored theater. Now in it's fourth year, the Fishtank continues to give Kansas City audiences a truly unique experience. The performance space allows for contemporary experimental live theater including original plays and performance events from Kansas City artists as well as national solo performing artists on tour.

Heidi Van, native of Kansas City and co-founder of The Fishtank, is the recipient of Charlotte Street Foundation 2012 Generative Performing Artist Award. Van, an experimentalist of theatre herself in all respects, has provided artists with the chance to take risks.

"Material performed at the Fishtank is untried; its content progressive, willing to take the first risks, of both writers and performers. Taking on projects where the material is so fresh helps keep the space activated," said Van.

The Fishtank's storefront theatre is the only one of its kind in Kansas City, yet not uncommon in other cities such as New York, Chicago and Seattle. A feature that draws in the attentive and excited patrons is the storefront window. This window provides Van a setting in which something, such as performances, can be displayed to its best effect.

"Moving into the storefront window enforces this 'no talking' rule, but I also break the fourth (glass) wall, by putting the musicians out there with the audience, and actors also use the sidewalk as a performance area. When they (or "we"  I perform myself, too) are inside the window, the "fishtank" effect really works: a tableau removed from the audience, yet exposed in a very public way," said Van.

Once noted as 'theater al fresco', starting off as a single performance, the "window play" has become a tradition among the Kansas City community. Van is providing patrons an urban theater experience, a show that puts you and your senses in the outer elements while entertaining the inner quality of artistry. Continuing in the tradition, this year's window play is titled 'Voyeur: An Urban Rhapsody'. Voyeur is the fourth window play conceived by Heidi Van. The first was L'Histoire D' Amour, then 53 Days & 52 Nights and Rubble. Van successfully installed L'Histoire in a window in New Orleans in 2010.

'Voyeur: An Urban Rhapsody' will be a one night public performance collaboration of this year's Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award recipients which also includes composer Pat Alonzo Conway.

Conway is a composer and creator of original music as well as a teacher and performing musician. In addition, Conway actively collaborates with a wide range of other musician, composers, and artists of other disciplines. He is also the director of Gamelan Genta Kasturi, a community-based Balinese orchestra currently in residence at City Center Square as part of Charlotte Street's Urban Cultures Project Studio Residency Program.

'Voyeur: An Urban Rhapsody' is conceived by Heidi Van in collaboration with Coleman Crenshaw, Pete Bakely, Shawna Downing, Hailey Jones, Alli Jordan, Gregory Casparian with original live music composed  by Conway and performed by the People's Liberation Big Band, a Kansas City band that was formed for the purpose of creating and performing new, large ensemble jazz music.

Come check out these distinguished artists doing what they do best. Hosted by the Charlotte Street Foundation and the Fishtank, 'Voyeur: An Urban Rhapsody' will be performed on October 5th, 2012 at 9:00 pm at the Fishtank Performance Studio located at 1715 Wyandotte, Kansas City, MO 64108.
