Men in Dance - The 9th Festival of Against the Grain
At Against the Grain/Men in Dance, we are dedicated to educating the public on the importance of men dancing in contemporary society asthey have always danced throughout history. It is our goal to produce performances that represent the diversity, power, artistic integrity and dedication of men who love to dance. Being a male dance artist takes courage, conviction, and an overpowering drive in order to engage in an art that is not often supported by the dominant culture. Our mission is to promote this journey.
THE 9TH FESTIVAL OF MEN IN DANCE FEATURES THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST OF CHOREOGRAPHERS AND DANCERS RETURNING TO PERFORM AT THE BROADWAY PERFORMANCE HALL
Returning choreographers/artists are: Geoffrey Johnson, Kaleidoscope Dance Co. (boys ages 8-15), Jason Ohlberg, Anthony Peters performing a Tap Jam, Olivier Wevers (Artistic Director Whim W'him), and Deborah Wolf. Local choreographers new to our festival are, Iyun Ashani Harrison and Paula J. Peters. Visiting Choreograpgers include: Mike Esperanza (recently located to New York from CA.),Bill Wade from Cleveland, OH and Josh Romero of Southern CA. Due to the critical acclaim, feedback, and sold out performances of past festivals we are excited to be returning to the Broadway Performance Hall and continuing to share our mission with a wider audience. We are also offering family matinee performances on October 14th and 21st, as we are committed to the idea that dance is for all ages. We hope that this festival inspires young people, particularly young men, to pursue their interest in dance.
