"FANNIE LOU" WORLD PREMIERE
Grew up with few opportunities.

Came from a poor, sharecropping family.

Didn't get past the 7th grade.

Hardly the characteristics of a person who would become one of the most influential social activists of the 20th century.

But that is what happened with Fannie Lou Hamer. And that's what the musical "Fannie Lou" is about. Join us for the world premiere on Oct. 6, 2012, in New York City.

The date holds special significance, since it is the 95th anniversary of Mrs. Hamer's birth. We're looking forward to seeing you there.

With a compelling script and a riveting score, "Fannie Lou" introduces the audience to Mrs. Hamer and her struggle to gain voting rights in rural Mississippi in the early 1960's. The production reveals Mrs. Hamer's determination and steadfast resolve, her influence on people around her, and their influence on her.

The music is a powerful array of ballads, mid-tempo songs and uptempo selections in pop, jazz, blues, light opera and traditional musical theater styles.

Fannie Lou Hamer's story epitomizes the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. To hear testimony Mrs. Hamer gave regarding her struggle for voting rights, visit the following web site:

The world premiere of "Fannie Lou" will be held at the Lang Recital Hall theater space at Hunter College. (The entrance to the hall is on East 69th Street at Lexington Avenue.) There will be two shows, a matinee and an evening performance. The duration of performances is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. There also are special additions planned for each event.

The matinee will begin at 2:30 p.m. Following that production a talk-back session with the audience, featuring some of the cast and crew members, will be presented. A reception will be held afterward. The talk-back session and the reception are free to all matinee ticket-holders.

The evening production of "Fannie Lou" will begin at 7:30 p.m. Preceding that, at 7 p.m., a special discussion about the legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer and the importance of voting rights will feature Mrs. Colia Clark, a friend and colleague of the late Fannie Lou Hamer. A reception will follow the production. All evening performance ticket-holders will be admitted to the pre-performance discussion and the post-performance reception free of charge.

Please note that each of the Oct. 6 performances is a not-for-profit event. All proceeds are being applied to production costs. Patrons who, along with purchasing a general admission ticket, would like to make a contribution of $10 or more to help defray production costs should enter the code ArtsPatron when making your ticket selection.
