Off The Hook Fish Fry: Henry Gourdine Reception
FISHING ON HENRY'S HUDSON Coming to the OAC in October
Program honors legendary Master Fisherman Henry Gourdine

OSSINING NY, -- For much of the month of October, the Ossining Arts Council's Steamer Firehouse Gallery will become a fishing shanty, and not just any fishing shanty.  It will be a replica of the shanty built and operated by Henry Gourdine, who spent a lifetime fishing the waters of the Hudson River.

With the help of an Arts Alive* matching grant from ArtsWestchester, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature, OAC members will reconstruct the shanty as an artistic interpretation of what once existed on the shores of the Hudson. Within the shanty, visitors can take a tour of Mr. Gourdine's life through a multi-disciplinary exhibit that tells the fascinating story of commercial fishing on the river.

Mr. Gourdine was renowned on the river as a fisherman, boatbuilder, net maker, employer and friend to people of all ages.  The OAC program will be a glimpse into the river's vibrant past and will feature a juried show of river-related artwork, a video of Mr. Gourdine talking about his life, an original folktale and more.

"Henry Gourdine was one of Ossining's most influential businessmen and educators who contributed substantially to the river's commercial fishing industry during the 20th Century," said OAC President Mark Sarazen.  "The OAC is honored and excited to put a spotlight on his achievements and the legacy he has left us."

FISHING ON HENRY'S HUDSON will be on view Oct. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 33 at 8 p.m. And Oct. 9, 16 and 23 at 3 p.m. Admission is $10 with children under 12 FREE.

The OAC Steamer Firehouse is located at 117 Main Street.  For more information, please visit www.ossiningartscouncil.org.
