Classical Mandolin Society Concert Series - Modern Mandolin Quartet & En Masse Mandolin Orchestra
This concert is the third of three public concerts presented in conjunction with the 2016 Classical Mandolin Society of America Convention to be held in at the Radisson Hotel in Valley Forge, PA, from November 2-6.
The first set of this Saturday night concert features the Modern Mandolin Quartet (MMQ), founded in the mid-1980s by Mike Marshall and Dana Rath. The current personnel list includes Dana Rath and Matt Flinner (mandolins), Radim Zenkl (mandola), and Adam Roszkiewicz. The critically acclaimed group has released seven CDs over the years and appeared on numerous Windham Hill samplers. The group's 2011 CD, "Americana," garnered a Grammy nomination.
Following a 30-year tradition, the final set features the mandolin convention's En Masse Orchestra, comprised of 175+ convention participants performing on mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar, and double bass. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear a plectrum orchestra of this size perform in North America. In addition to works by contemporary and 20th century composers for mandolin orchestra, the program will also include a very special performance of Aaron Copland's "Hoedown" from "Rodeo." Dr. James Bates, a perennial favorite among convention attendees, returns again this year to conduct the En Masse Orchestra.
