Giant sculptures evoke the ruins of Athens in Hero Now Theatre's production of a classic of ancient Greek drama--The Oresteia by Aeschylus--in a modern adaptation by classicist and Northfield's first poet laureate, Rob Hardy.
This 2-hour adaptation brings the ancient story alive. Orestes returns from exile to revenge the murder of his father, Agamemnon the king, by his mother's hand, continuing the vengeance that has cursed his family. Is there any way to escape the endless bloodshed?
Performed outside in Zoran Mojsilov's sculpture gallery, this production will forge a bond between you and the Athenians who struggled with this and other questions.
Two specially scheduled talk-backs will take place:
Thursday, Sept 15: panel discussion led by former dean of Mitchell Hamline Law School Eric Janus will focus on the Greeks' contributions to Western legal institutions. CLE credit pending.
Sunday, Sept 18: a panel including Rob Hardy and another classics scholar, Clara Hardy, professor at Carleton College, focusing on the play's history and on the challenges of translating and adapting the ancient Greek text.
NOTE: The September 17th performance has been canceled because a rock festival was recently moved to a site less than half a mile from the play's venue.
