BUTOH BEETHOVEN
NEW YORK PREMIERE
After a triumphant international tour, BUTOH BEETHOVEN comes to NEW YORK!
New York Butoh star Vangeline conjures the ghosts of two passionate giants Tatsumi Hijikata, founder of Butoh, and composer Ludwig van Beethoven in this hypnotic, electrifying and award-winning solo performance.
PERFORMED AND CHOREOGRAPHED BY VANGELINE, BUTOH BEETHOVEN IS A CONTEMPORARY HOMAGE TO THE FOUNDER OF BUTOH, TATSUMI HIJIKATA.
Winner of glowing 4-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2015, Butoh Beethoven also pays tribute to the tumultuous life of legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
Beethoven meets Butoh as Vangelines performance conjures up the ghosts of two passionate giants. Vangelines performance draws from Ankoku Butoh (Dance of Darkness) and follows the tradition of Japanese Noh Theatre, where performers first appear as human, then as ghosts.
Tatsumi Hijikatas costume worn for his last public solo performance in 1968 (Revolt Of The Body- Hijikata And The Japanese) is the inspiration for Vangelines costume created by New York designer Todd Thomas.
As an added element, Butoh Beethoven integrates cutting edge lighting technologies. Vangeline shines a new light on Butoh as a bed of glowing stones transports the audience to the sound of waves crashing; a led baton illuminates the enveloping darkness; and Vangeline herself changes into a luminous, stunning fiber optics dress.
