Weird Seances: MAX DYSPR-AXES
We are, Daniel tells us, in the future looking back on the traumatic incident that occurred right here, in this space, during his show. We have returned to this site to partially reconstruct the tragic performance, to discuss blame, and to attempt to make amends with those who survived.
Weird Séances are raucously deconstructionist, roughly layered participatory performances about participatory performance. Each show is haphazardly crow-barred into its site and context; rejigged, added to, undone and perverted so that no two performances are the same.
Weird Séances often include live bands, most often Snapped Ankles. Daniel is hoping to work with some Edinburgh bands for his Edinburgh/Forest Fringe versions of the show.
Contains nudity. Photo credit: Guido Mencari. Daniel makes calamitous participatory performances. He has been doing so since 2003. They mix pre-planned words and actions with last minute event-specific decision making and improvised dialogue with participants. He mixes precariously maintained fantasies with clunky reality, indulging the liveness of working with unprepared participants. Shows are unashamedly dyspraxic, embracing Daniels off-kilter relationship with social interaction and executive planning.
He is also a researcher and teaching fellow in the Drama department at Queen Mary, University of London.
