Event
SCMF Wild Mushroom Foray
Join us in Scotts Valley, California from December 8th-11th, 2016 for a long weekend of mushroom activities, food, foraging and learning about many marvelous mushrooms of the bio-region.
This event will include lectures, workshops, and of course, mushroom hunting!
Santa Cruz County is famous for being the southern stronghold of Coast Redwoods, and in Mid-December we should see outstanding diversity as a good mix of fall species overlap with early-winter varieties.
The foray will feature a number of nationally acclaimed speakers, including Dr. Else Vellinga (California's premier mushroom taxonomist, expert on Lepiota and allies), Britt Bunyard (editor of Fungi Magazine and investigator of fungus-fly relationships), and Dr. Mike Castellano, world expert on truffles and other hypogeous fungi.
To top it off, the brand new field guide Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast will be available for purchase and signing. What better way to celebrate than a mushroom foray with the authors: Noah Siegel and Christian Schwarz. Both will be present to teach you tips and tricks on using this new guide, as well as leading identification workshops for beginners and more experienced mushroom enthusiasts alike.
All of our findings will go towards a greater understanding of the fungi of California. In partnership with the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Mycoflora Project, we'll be making vouchered specimens for the UC Santa Cruz fungal herbarium and sequencing project.
Cost for attendees staying on-site is $285 including meals, lodging, and foray programs (total $295 including ticket fees). Sign up now before the event sells out!
There are also a very limited number of spaces for off-site attendees - cost will be $150 (+ $6.24 in ticket fees). If you want to get an off-site rate, it's crucial to register early.
