Norsk Folkedans Stemne presents Gudbrandsdalsdansere, dancers from Gudbrandsdal, Norway, this August at our Salmon dinner and Norsk Folkedans Stemne!

Ingrid Maurstad Tuko brings a select group of dancers and musicians to this years stemne:
Ingrid learned to dance at home. She remembers at the age of 5-6 dancing the masurka standing on her grandfathers feet! He also taught her the Masurka from Bingen which she will be teaching at stemne. Ingrid also enjoys teaching children dances from Norway. Currently, she is the chair of National Costumes with Noregs Ungdomslags.

Nils Slapgård started to dance Norwegian folk dance at 18 years old in a leikarring, dance circle, in Trøndelag, and has been dancing ever since. He will be 73 very soon and plans to dance until he turns 100! He has taught several courses in song dances, figure dances, childrens dances and other folkdances from Noregs Ungdomslag, a national organization. He was an instructor for many years in Trøndelag. Nils and Ingrid have taught Norwegian folk dance in several countries during the last 28 years and have returned to teach at Norsk Folkedans Stemne at least three times.

Rikard Skjelkvåle is a third generation fiddler from Skjåk. His grandfather, Rikkar (1890-1976) was one of the most central fiddlers in the special tradition from Skjåk, with the most legendary fiddlers in Gudbrandsdalen, Fel-Jakup (1821-1876). Rikard has learned to play in the old style in Lom and Skjåk and teaches both  children and adults. He is a member of Lom Spelemannslag, one of the best in Norway, winning many  prizes in national competitions.

Hallvar Opheim brings his torader to stemne for all of you making special requests to learn more music from him. He is knowledgeable about many types of folk music. He is teaching some great music from Lom and Skjåk. This is a return trip for Hallvar and we welcome him back. He is well known for his instruction on this instrument in Norway. Rikard, Hallvar and Ingeborg Elise will play together and as soloists during the performance.

Ingeborg Elise Moen is born in Bingen (we have one Masurka from there!) She is 24 years old, and has been playing violin/fiddle since she was a little girl. This year she won the fiddle class at the Buskerud-kappleik (competition) at Gol. She played for leikarringen in Hokksund many years and made a CD when she was 16! Along with playing fiddle, she also composes tunes.

Look forward to performances and instruction in Innherredspols, Masurka fra Bingen, Reinlender, Skjåkspringleik and Vågåspringleik at Norsk Folkedans Stemne.

Gudbrandsdal is in the Oppland fylke. Oppland is the home place of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson who wrote the Norwegian national anthem, Ja vi elsker. This fylke is one of the few which is bordered only by other Norwegian fylker. It is in the center of the lower region of Norway. Because of its location, much Norwegian history has taken place here including Priller Guris famous warning, the Olympics, Kristin Lavransdatter and author Sigrid Undset, the Birkebeiner route, and so much more. The beautiful valleys of Gudbrandsdalen and Valdres are a sight to behold and home to some favorite regional folk dances called springleikardifferent variations of the dance will be taught at Norsk Folkedans Stemne.

What is a Norsk Folkedans Stemne (nynorsk): In Norway, a stemne is a gathering of folk dancers and musicians sharing their knowledge of dances and music. Now in our fourth decade, we carry on this living tradition with select group of dance and music instructors. Norwegian folkdance groups from Canada, the United States, and Norway share this wonderful opportunity to dance favorites, learn new dances and music, and information.

Come and enjoy the immersion for all levels of dancers from beginning to advanced into all the types of Norwegian folkdancing and music from the bygdedansar Skjåkspringleik, Vågåspringleik, and Innherredspols; runddansar including Masurka fra Bingen, reinlender; songdansar such as Flauman går inspired by Norways struggle for independence; and turdansar og rekkedansar (figure dances and longways dances) such as rils, Fandango from Austlandet and Storelvdal. Our website will have updates as to the dances being taught at www.seattlestemne.org
