West Bergen--East Lincoln Historic District Walking Tour in Jersey City
The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy kicks off Preservation Month, May 2016, showcasing West Bergen--East Lincoln, the city's newly designated historic district. On Saturday, May 7th at noon, Dennis Doran, Jersey City historian, will lead a tour of the Silk Stocking district--home to legendary "I am the law" Mayor Frank Hague. Meet at St Peter's University at the NE corner of Montgomery Street and Kennedy Boulevard. The tour includes punch on the spacious, semi-circular porch of a gracious home in the district. From the late 19th Century through the early 20th Century the Bergen section of Jersey City along Hudson (now Kennedy)Boulevard was the wealthiest and most prestigious section of the city. Discover the landmark mansions, clubs, houses of worship and classic apartment dwellings of Jersey City's elite and learn some of the fascinating stories of the city's leading citizens in its Bon Ton days.
