Meditative Soundscapes
This concert features two solo flute performers whose music is being paired for the first time ever. Kakizakai Kaoru from Saitama Prefecture in Japan is an internationally acclaimed master of the Shakuhachi, the vertical end-blown flute indigenous to Japan. He will be playing a selection of traditional meditative and contemporary pieces and will be joined by Seattle's own Gary Stroutsos, an equally acclaimed jazz flutist and master of Native American flute. For this program however, Mr. Stroutsos will be playing the desert rim flute, an instrument patterned after ancient Southwest desert flutes discovered in northeast Arizona in the 1930's which are similar in construction and sound to the shakuhachi. Mr. Stroutsos will be playing several improvised pieces which will contrast beautifully with the sound of the Japanese flute of Mr. Kakizakai.
