The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
An American classic set against the backdrop of 1930s depression-era St. Louis, The Glass Menagerie is the gut-wrenching story of the Wingfield family. Tom, an aspiring poet, toils away his days in a shoe factory in order to support his debilitatingly shy sister, Laura, and mother, Amanda, a southern Belle who was forced into single motherhood when her husband left 16 years previous. Torn between duty to his family and the expectations of society, Tom must decide whether to stay and perish or pursue his own life path. The Glass Menagerie, winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, "...captures better than any play the claustrophobic reality of family life, with its jostling interests, imposing expectations, burdensome concern and overwhelming love." (Los Angeles Times).
