Radium Girls is a play based upon the Radium Girls who, beginning in 1917 (1911 in our play), worked at the US Radium Company painting glow-in-the-dark watch dials for WWI soldiers. The paint contained radium, which at the time wasn't known to be dangerous. In fact, radium was touted as a "cure-all". The girls at the plant "pointed" the brushes with their mouths rather than with cloth in order to increase production, and as a result, suffered from necrosis and died, sometimes after years of immeasurable suffering. This historical fictional drama is a fascinating exploration of the media hype that can surround victims of workplace injustice and corporate cover-up that resonates to this day!
